Kids head to Onset Pier for lessons on local habitat

Kids in the Wareham Boys & Girls Club summer camp really dug a few lessons on oysters from Harbormaster Garry Buckminster on Friday morning.

The campers, who range in age from 7 to 14 years old, walked from the club’s Hammond Street location to the Onset Pier where they glimpsed oysters and learned about their habitat. Afterwards, they explored the Harbormaster’s boat, just for fun.

The excursion was part of the Club’s “Kukoo” project, a series of educational workshops designed to get kids excited about the local environment.

At the pier, Buckminster had oysters spread out in the back of a Harbormaster Department pickup truck.

Campers examined the oysters, which act as natural filters, helping to clean the bay, explained Buckminster.

“There’s a lot of opportunities here in Onset and Buzzards Bay. Kayaking, swimming, fishing, boating or just enjoying being outside,” said Sherbie Worthen, a member of the Club’s board of directors. “For the kids, there’s so much potential to learn.”

Worthen noted that improvements are on the way for Onset’s waterfront. The Buzzards Bay Coalition will soon revamp the Onset Bath House and turn it into an educational and recreational center with a variety of programs available.
