Kiosks bring in cash for Wareham
Revenues from parking meter kiosks have reached $132,351 as of Sept. 1 according to Town Administrator Derek Sullivan. The results far exceed the town's $90,000 goal that had been set for the summer.
Sullivan said the total parking kiosk revenue from August was $51,176. During the same time period last year the parking revenue was $35,906. The Onset Pier alone has brought in $95,000. Sullivan said that previously, the best year for the Pier was $65,000.
Last year the town put parking kiosks at the Onset Pier and at Temple Lot on Union Avenue. Prior to last year, attendants manned the Town Pier lot and collected parking fees and there was no charge to park in the Temple Lot.
This summer, three more parking kiosks were added to the program: Two on Onset Avenue and one at Shell Point.
Sullivan said the money generated from the kiosks could potentially be used for things such as fixing the Onset Pier, line-painting, signage and other uses in the area, including eventually expanding the kiosks into Wareham.
"It's just the start of the program," said Selectman Stephen Holmes at a meeting in July. "We're going to extend this from one end of the town line to the other."
