Knit Wits receives donation from Veterans of Foreign Wars

May 16, 2011

If you had the “wool pulled over your eyes” a frustrated “knitted brow” would result. A totally opposite reaction happened when Wareham resident Sheila Monaghan opened a letter from the Plymouth Memorial Post 1822 Veterans of Foreign Wars and found a $1,000 donation for the local Knit Wits.

Monaghan solicited donations of either wool yarn or financial support so that her group could expand its mission to include the national Operation Helmetliner. Expensive soft wool yarn is required to make helmetliners, neck gators, and scarves for our Armed Forces. Cheaper synthetic fibers melt but wool is less flammable and warm even when wet.

As a result of the Plymouth Veterans of Foreign Wars' gift, the score of knitters at the Great Hill Estates' Thursday 9:30 a.m. Knit Wits group will be working with the required solid black, charcoal, brown, tan, or olive drab wool for quite a while, Monaghan said, adding that she was “shocked and awed” by the generous donation.

Since October, the spirited, witty group has made over 500 hats, mittens, scarves, and afghans for the local needy. The group is grateful for the response of the Wareham community, Monaghan said.
