Library accepts check to buy books
The Friends of the Wareham Free Library presented a $3,000 check to the cash-strapped Wareham library Thursday morning.
"This means we can buy more books. We love buying books" said Library Director Denise Mederios. "With decertification coming in December at the latest, we're doing everything we can to get more books."
The state Board of Library Commissioners said the library would be decertified as of Dec. 4, 2014 if the library budget is not restored to the 2013 level of $432,835. That means that Wareham library patrons would be unable to borrow books and materials from other libraries.
Priscilla Porter, president of the Friends of the Wareham Free Library said the group's biggest source of our income is the book sales held every few months.
The most recent book sale last month raised raised more than $1,500 for the organization. The next book sale is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 22 and 23.
The library also holds an ongoing book sale in the lobby of the library. Joan Powilatis, treasurer of the Friends of Wareham Free Library said sales from those books garnered $31 last week and likely about that same amount this week.
The Library also holds a silent auction on books every month. This month features novels from Christopher Morley, Booth Tarkington and Matthew Arnold.
