Liquor license granted to Americana Cafe

May 18, 2016

Concerns about disturbances related to alcohol near two churches and a funeral home were smoothed over during the Selectmen's meeting Tuesday night.

Karen Moore, the owner of Americana Cafe, located at 208 Main St., was granted a seasonal license to sell beer and wine, with the stipulation that it would only be sold indoors, in the location behind Brennan's Smoke Shop.

Chris Consoletti, who owns Wareham Village Funeral Home, which is next to Americana Cafe, opposed the application. He asked Selectmen if everyone in the neighboring area was notified of this license application before the vote.

"If any liquor is sold from her facility, it should be consumed inside her facility," he said. "We spend a lot of time in the community cleaning that Pezzoli Square. It was tough in the past with all the things going on."

Consoletti's concern, as well as the Selectmen's, was that the alcohol would be served outside.

"We've required enclosures be built so you can control alcohol when it's served outside," said Selectman Peter Teitelbaum. "We've done that consistently for several years now. We've made it so it's difficult for alcohol to be passed out. We could grant for inside tonight."

Moore conceded to all requests.

"Trust me, I want to work with all the neighborhood," Moore said. Though she plans to have two or three tables outside, she agreed to not serve alcohol outside.

"I'll make sure I abide to that," said Moore.

The hours of operation will be from 11 a.m. to  9 p.m., seven days a week, and the restaurant is set to open the first week of June.

Moore and Consoletti spoke together out in the hall after the hearing, working out the issues as neighbors.

In other town business

Another restaurant in town is making some upgrades. Gourmet Garden, which opened on April 26, will soon feature a piano, karaoke, DJs, dancing, and bands on Friday and Saturday nights from 8:30 p.m. to midnight. Their application for an entertainment license was approved Tuesday night.

The Selectmen made a number of announcements during their meeting on Tuesday, including the veterans train to the 12th annual Troops in the Spotlight event in Hyannis.

All veterans are invited to travel on the CapeFLYER for free, which will leave at 8 a.m. from Boston on May 29. Two stops include Wareham and Buzzards Bay and food is free. To reserve a spot, send a request to VeteransVoiceRadio@gmail.com.
