A Wareham veteran is a finalist in the eighth annual New Year, New Roof Giveaway.

The giveaway is sponsored by Care Free Homes, a Fairhaven-based home improvement company.

Communities from Cape Cod, Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts nominated deserving homeowners for a free GAF Timberline HDZ roofing system earlier this month. Five finalists were chosen, and online voters from the community will decide the winner.

Joe Mello, an Army veteran and Wareham native who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is one of the finalists. The other finalists are Bonnie DeGregorio of New Bedford, Rita DeSouza of New Bedford, Matthew Laflamme of Fall River and Ernie and Judy Machado of Acushnet.

Community members can read the stories of each finalist and cast their votes online from Jan. 10 to 15 at https://carefreehomescompany.com. The winner will be announced on or around Jan. 18.
