Locals go on ‘Amazing’ adventures at Fabulous Race
The third running of “The Fabulous Race” in Wareham last Saturday gave a whole new meaning to the phrase reality TV.
More than 30 people in teams of two traversed land and sea through Wareham, Carver, Marion and Plymouth solving puzzles and completing challenges to see who could finish first.
The race is based on the TV show, “The Amazing Race” and is the brainchild of Wareham resident Paula Ventura.
“I watch the show faithfully and said, ‘Boy, wouldn’t that be fun to do locally’,” Ventura said.
The race is all about completing challenges and finding clues that lead to the next destination. Ventura’s race featured 10 tasks.
These included digging for clues in the sand of cranberry bogs, kayaking or swimming for clues in the Weweantic river and eight other physical and mental obstacles strewn across the South Coast.
Ventura organized the first Fabulous Race about eight years ago with six teams, then resurrected it last year for the second race. This year there were 17 total teams. All participants were friends of hers.
Ventura said as the organizer, things were a bit chaotic at times (she had to kayak from Dexter Beach in Marion to retrieve some rouge inner tubes before they drifted out too far into Buzzards Bay) but that everyone, including herself, had a blast.
“It was such a fun experience!” said Reagan Westgate, who, along with her husband Allen, were the first team to finish the race in a little over three hours.
“My husband and I love adventurous activities. It gets your heart racing and adrenaline pumping,” Westgate said.
Ventura said she is likely to cap the amount of teams at this year’s size, but hopes to make the race even longer and more challenging next year.
“I’ll be driving down the road and see something then suddenly think, ‘Oh that’s perfect for the race,’” she said.
