Elks walk through American history for Flag Day

Jun 3, 2023

The Wareham-New Bedford Lodge of Elks #73 celebrated Flag Day with a presentation of flags from throughout American history on Saturday, June 3.

“The evolution of the American flag marks the progression of the government of the American people,” said Elk Jim Callan.

Cadets from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy carried a variety of flags that have flown over American ships since the founding of the country, from the “Pine Tree Flag” from 1775 to the modern 50-star flag, which became official in 1959 with the admittance of Hawaii as the 50th state.

Although Flag Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 14, the Elks decided to honor the flag early due to previous commitments.

Several Elks spoke about what the flag means to them, and how they understand its place in American history.

“[Soldiers] wear it as a patch on our uniform, because we’re out on the front lines and we’re willing to sacrifice our lives for freedom,” said Elk and Army veteran Steven Hunt.

Twelve-year-old Ruby Duffy spoke briefly about what the American flag means to her. Duffy said the flag symbolizes all of the freedoms that Americans enjoy.

The Lodge has honored Flag Day “since the beginning of the Elks,” said Elks Flag Day Chair Ray Rock, Sr.

“We salute [the flag] when we start the meeting and when we end it,” Rock said.

The Lodge hosts public events weekly, including Bingo on Tuesdays and line dancing on Wednesdays.
