Main Street work ending, chance for new health insurance beginning
Community Economic Development Authority Director Sal Pina told Selectmen Tuesday that the third and current phase of the "Streetscape" project on Main Street is currently ahead of schedule and could be done by the end of the month.
"We should be pretty much complete by the end of April," he said of the third phase of four total, which has widened sidewalks and made other improvements for pedestrians in Wareham Village.
The only thing that could take longer, according to Pina, are the light poles and benches that have yet to come in, but he said they should be set up by the end of May at the latest.
Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said he recently met with union representatives, and as a result, sent a letter to the Mayflower Health Group telling them Wareham is interested in health insurance for town employees.
"This is a step to get us out of being self-funded and potentially saving the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars per year," he said.
"This could be a substantial savings to the town, but also would give us stability in the budget in the coming years," said Selectman Alan Slavin.
