Marion man charged with kidnapping after police standoff
Two people are in custody, one on a kidnapping charge, after a seven-hour police standoff ended peacefully at 3 a.m. Thursday morning.
Spencer Mello, 26, of Marion has been charged with kidnapping. Twenty-seven-year-old Jaimee Morris, who is listed as homeless, was arrested on an unrelated default warrant following the incident.
Wareham Police and Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council S.W.A.T. officers responded to 36 Sunset Boulevard in East Wareham at about 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
Officials were told that at least one person was being held hostage inside the home.
Upon arrival, officers reported that they were ignored while lights were turned off and doors locked. According to police, four adults and two sleeping children were inside the home during the standoff.
At about 3 a.m., those inside the home exited to speak with officers, but would not provide a full account of what happened, police said.
Police arrested Mello soon after 3 a.m. Morris was arrested two and half hours later when caseworkers from the state’s Department of Children & Families returned to check on the children.
Police noted that Morris is not the mother of the children present in the home.
Mello and Morris were scheduled to be arraigned in Wareham District Court on Thursday, Dec. 1.
No one was injured during the incident.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and updates will be provided when more information is available.
