On Memorial Day, Wareham remembers those who made the ultimate sacrifice
As the sun beat down and flags flew at half staff on Monday, a group of veterans traveled across Wareham to place wreaths in cemeteries and at the sites of various memorials to remember, and honor, their fallen brothers and sisters on Memorial Day.
Beginning at Centre Cemetery, Charles VanderStaay of Wareham's American Legion Post #220 said a prayer for the fallen soldiers, rifles were shot into the air in memorium, and Allyson Giannelli played "Taps" on her trumpet.
The ceremony was repeated at the town's other cemeteries, as well as at the soldiers' monument in Wareham Center, and monuments at the Onset Bluffs and Dudley Brown Square, and finally at Besse Park and Town Hall.
And at Besse Park, a wreath was tossed into the water, VanderStaay explained, "for those who are buried at sea."
