Minot Forest students learn their town's history
Students at Minot Forest Elementary took a trip through time as three people dressed from centuries past taught them about historical places and figures associated with Wareham.
Wareham Historical Society President Angela Dunham, Vice President Mary Hull, and society member Paul Girard showed the children slides from a booklet, “People and Places”, the society published with a Summer of Celebration 2014 grant. Each page of the booklet had a blurb about the place or person shown -- just enough to teach the children, but not so much that they would zone out, according to Dunham.
“The reason [we] created this booklet … is because we don’t have a young audience,” Dunham said. “We’re hoping to reach out to the young children, to give them a sense of pride, a sense of heritage and tradition from their community.”
Dunham said the booklet, created with sketches by local artists Donna Truran and David Blanchette, has 19 historical places and figures represented, but that the latter was by no means all-inclusive.
“There were so many more, but we couldn’t fit them all,” Dunham said of the 10 historical figures in the book.
Dunham hopes the booklets don’t just inspire the students, but their parents, who may also not know much Wareham history, too.
“We hope that they will share it with their parents, and start looking for the buildings,” Dunham said. “We want young families to recognize the rich culture we have here in Wareham.”
