More than 24,000 people attend Wareham's Cranberry Harvest Celebration
Visitors came from China, the Czech Republic, England, France, India, Italy, and Sweden, but there was no shortage of Wareham residents and New England neighbors at the 9th annual Cranberry Harvest Celebration.
The festival, which is hosted by the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers' Association and the A.D. Makepeace Company, kicked off on Saturday with 17,000 visitors. Another 7,000 people walked through the gate on Sunday.
Sunny weather brought hundreds -- including U.S. Senator Scott Brown -- to the A.D. Makepeace bogs in Tihonet Village, where visitors could watch workers harvest a flooded bog and try their hand at dry-harvesting berries.
"I think we can already say [the harvest celebration] was a big success," Linda Burke, A.D. Makepeace vice-president of marketing and communication, said Saturday afternoon.
In addition to showcasing the area's cranberry industry, the Harvest Celebration offered a juried craft fair, musical entertainment, tons of food, and plenty of activities for families and children.
"People don't just come for the cranberry tour," Burke noted.
