Jan 13, 2025
Neil F. Collins, 81, of Onset, MA passed away peacefully at home on January 8, 2025.

Born in Worcester, MA to the late Cornelius and Louise (Klouse) Collins, he was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Worcester State University and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

He spent his career in the Worcester Public School system as a teacher, later as a principal, and finally as an administrator overseeing the construction of several new schools. Neil and Shirley raised their children in Paxton, MA where Neil served his community by coaching youth sports and chaperoning the youth ski program. He also served his country in the National Guard.

Neil was the happiest among family and friends, singing songs and telling jokes. His love of singing began in the St. Paul’s Cathedral Boys Choir and continued throughout his life. Neil was also a vocal New England sports fan and an avid golfer, described by one friend as the only guy who could hit a drive, jump in his cart, and get there before the ball landed.

For the past 15 years, he and Shirley lived in Onset, MA and spent the winters in Florida, enjoying time with many friends.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley (Palmer); his son, David and his wife Cary of Middletown, NJ; his daughter, Kristin of Boston; granddaughters, Maura and Elizabeth; his sisters, Ann and Maureen of Plymouth; his brother-in-law, Stephen Curtin; four nephews; a large extended family; and many friends.

Neil was predeceased by his sister Patricia Curtin in 2016.

Donations can be made to Cranberry Hospice of Plymouth, MA, St. Jude’s, or to a charity of one’s choice.
