New community center for Wareham organizations under consideration

A community center may be in the works for Wareham, Selectman Alan Slavin announced at Tuesday's Selectmen meeting.

Slavin said he hopes the town can build a community center to house the Council on Aging, the Wareham Boys & Girls Club and six or seven other community organizations. It could even include a library, he said.

"We need to group together as a single entity," Slavin said.

He is working with the Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District (SRPEDD) to see what can be done in the area. The first steps are to meet with SRPEDD to lay the groundwork. After that, the town can look into finding land, raising money and applying for grants for the project. Gatra would provide transportation to the community center, Slavin said.

"People have to work together on this," he said. "The word community center is just that, it's a community."

The plan will be carefully developed so it is sustainable in the long-term, Slavin said.

"The town can't afford to do a major project that will fail," he said.
