New police cruiser involved in accident
One of the Police Department's brand new cruisers was involved in a two-car accident on Cranberry Highway late Friday afternoon. The incident required two EMS units and the occupants - an officer in the cruiser and two people in the other car involved - were taken to Tobey Hospital with minor injuries. They were all checked and released.
Both cars were towed from the scene.
"It was a little more than a fender bender," said Wareham Police Department Public-Information Officer Bill Fihlman.
The accident occurred at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Rt. 6A East at Tyler Ave., by Abbey Glass, said Fihlman.
An investigation is ongoing and is being handled by the State Police. A State Police representative said there was, of yet, no determination as to the cause of the accident. The extent of damage to the vehicle was also undetermined.
The cruiser was one of nine new, state-of-the-art vehicles unveiled by the Police Department on March 5. Eight cruisers and one sport utility vehicle are being leased by the Department, and the town dedicated part of a $107,000 Justice Assistance grant for the initial down payment.
According to the police log, the male operator of the second vehicle was given a civil by law citation for possession of marijuana.
