New tourism committee wants businesses' information

Jan 22, 2014

There is a newly formed Wareham Beach and Tourism Advisory Committee, and this committee is looking to work with businesses.

"We've developed an action plan, and now we're working on identifying our assets," board member Linda Burke said. Burke is also the vice president of marketing at A.D. Makepeace. "We want to find information on restaurants and businesses, hiking and nature trails to make an encyclopedia for visitors."

The committee formed in October 2013, and hopes to make the town more accessible to visitors. The committee's formation was helped by Selectman Peter Teitelbaum, and consists of him, Burke, Bruce Hutchins and Mary Bruce.

Hutchins is the committee's chair, and already works at the visitor's center on Interstate 195. Both he and Burke were appointed to the committee by Selectmen in September 2013.

The committee has established a brief online survey for businesses, and is asking for input from interested businesses and groups.

The purpose of the survey is to enable businesses to supply up-to-date information so the Committee can create a comprehensive website and/or printed brochure.  Such a listing will be available for residents, visitors or folks just passing through the town of Wareham.

"After that, we want to do promotion through a new website and brochures," Burke said.

Ultimately, the committee would like to have the site include a calendar of the events taking place in town, transportation schedules for all modes of travel in and around town and a list with web links of all retail and service related businesses.

"It's amazing something like this hasn't been done," Burke said. "The town has a lot to offer."

A link to the survey is available on the Town’s website.
