Officials support joining statewide wastewater emergency aid group

In the case of an emergency, you want all the help you can get.

That simple thought is the basis of what Wareham Water Pollution Control Facility Director Guy Campinha presented to Selectmen Tuesday when he spoke about the Massachusetts Water/Wastewater Agency Response Network.

"It's a non-committal group of public water and sewer utilities that aid each other in the event of an emergency or catastrophe," Campinha said.

Joining the group would allow Wareham to request equipment, personnel and other resources from member towns and offer the same in return during an emergency or catastrophe situation.

Campinha explained that there is no fee to join, there are 70 members across the state and the members are eligible for work reimbursements from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the case of a declared federal emergency.

Campinha was granted approval by the Selectmen to speak with the Town Administrator on the details of joining the program.

"I don't see any drawbacks to this whatsoever," said Selectman Peter Teitelbaum.

He asked Campinha about the possibility of asking neighboring towns to join the group and Campinha replied that he was already involved in doing so.

According to Campinha, Bourne is a member of the group but Plainville is the closest town that has similar types of equipment that he could use in an emergency. He also said that beyond equipment, personnel would be a big need.

"It looks like a really good idea in terms of focusing assets where they’re needed most, when they’re needed most," Selectman Judith Whiteside said.
