The tradition of blessing area mariners lives on in Onset as 32 boats participated in The Sixth Annual Blessing of the Fleet this Saturday, July 6.

“As beautiful and surreal as the mother ocean can be, she can also be very, very angry,” said master of ceremonies Mike Fawcett. “Waves are dangerous and can test the skill of the most skilled mariners. That’s why many fishing and boating communities throughout the world have blessed their fleets for centuries. As good as you are at the helm, most mariners know that respecting mother ocean is the way to go, because she can bite you in the blink of an eye.”

After the blessing of the fleet, spectators enjoyed Pet, Doll Carriage, and Bicycle Parades. Dressed in red, white, and blue attire, kids showcased their decorated bicycles and bright carriages with dolls inside. Dogs tagged along. 

“The parade involves the patriotic part of the Fourth of July and shows the kids what this holiday is all about,” said Barbara Smith, a volunteer at the Onset Bay Association. “Hopefully, when kids are dressed up like this, their parents are telling them that this is a celebration of freedom.”

The Fourth of July celebration will continue on Sunday, July 7, with annual Onset Fireworks at 9 p.m.
