An Onset man was cited for making an improper turn, and for unsafe operation of a motor vehicle after colliding with a Wareham Police cruiser at approximately 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10.

Wareham Police Sgt. Christopher Park and the 18-year-old passenger of a PT Cruiser were both transported to Tobey Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Wareham Police.

The Jaws of Life were used to extricate the driver, 19-year-old Raymond Green, from the car. Green refused medical treatment at the scene, police said.

An investigation by police revealed that that as Green was approaching the intersection of Old Town Road and Onset Avenue, he dropped a drink bottle, which got stuck between his foot and the gas pedal.

Green told officials at the scene that he'd dropped the bottle, said Wareham Police Lt. Kevin Walsh.

According to police, this caused his car to accelerate onto Onset Avenue into the path of the police cruiser.

Onset resident Laurie DeBarros said she witnessed the accident: “The car was coming out of Old Town Road and just as it’s coming out the cop comes flying down Onset Ave., no lights or nothing, and t-boned the car.”

But following the investigation, Walsh said it was determined that the officer was not at fault in the collision.

"In this case, the officer was not at fault at all," said Walsh. "There was no doubt about the fault of the accident."

The PT Cruiser was flipped on its side, and the police cruiser had visible front end damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
