State Rep. Susan Williams Gifford extended her best wishes to Onset native Mary Vieira Rose on celebrating her 100th birthday next week.

Rose's daughter Marian said Rose has a great historical knowledge of Wareham and remembers what it was like in the "good old days."

Marian said her mother remembers getting news from the man who rode in on horseback visiting others in the area. She said she remembers the first radio, the first TV shows and even when her family experienced running water for the first time.

Rose serves as the historian for the local Oakgrove Cape Verdean Cultural Center organization. Her secret to a long life? According to Marian it's to love one another, be positive, enjoy travel and just plain keep going every day with faith in God.
