Onset Summer of Love thriving with Jones at the helm

Jul 28, 2014

Even as a youngster, Kat Jones was always around music.

Growing up in Natick, she sang in the church choir with her mom, did chorus and drama in junior high and high school, jammed in her brother’s improvised music studio at her family’s house, and even hung out with a blind man who tuned pianos at the nearby Perkins Institute for the Blind.

“There was always music in the house,” said Jones. “I always had music around me as a kid.”

For the past seven years, Jones has helped to put on the Onset Summer of Love series, taking sole control of the event three years ago. The series offers free concerts at the Lillian Gregerman Band Shell from 6:30 to 9:30 every Wednesday evening during the summer. Not only does she organize the events, but she recently performed as the lead singer for one of the main acts, a Led Zeppelin cover band called Heartbreaker.

“She’s such an asset to the town,” said Erik Bevans, co-owner of Quahog Republic, a restaurant/bar that abuts the band shell. “In a town that has had its struggles, she’s done such a great job for the community here. She works so hard.”

Jones, who lives in Onset, said there had been an acoustic series in Onset on Wednesday nights in the past, but that it ceased to exist. A few years later, she and a group of others were approached about doing something similar. This time, they would get full bands to perform. The concerts have been going strong ever since.

This year, Jones said they’ve averaged about 800 people per show, which have included The Spirit of Santana (a Santana cover band), 57 Heavy (a Pink Floyd cover band), Heartbreaker, and Plymouth Fury, a Plymouth-based cover band.

“On the average, it’s been record-breaking,” said Jones of this year’s events. “All of the nights have been pretty strong.”

At the Heartbreaker show on July 23, Jones channeled her inner Robert Plant, leading her band through a list of Led Zeppelin’s classics. Prior to working with Heartbreaker, Jones said she performed mostly with acoustic acts.

“It was quite a change from what I had done for a long time,” said Jones of her time with Heartbreaker. “I let my inner rock star out when I met those guys.”

Jones can be viewed as a rockstar for her work as a Heartbreaker’s lead singer, and the same can be said for her work organizing the very successful summer music series.

Initially, Jones said the Summer of Love was barely able to pay bands to perform. As the events grew, the concert series was able to raise more money. That came from grants, donations from local businesses, residents, and the Onset Bay Association.

“Basically, the first year, we had a varied group of musicians come, but we couldn’t really pay a lot. We pay $100 a band member now, which is far different," Jones said.

She said the success of the recent events has to do with the location in Onset combined with the talent that is performing.

“I just think it’s a great spot to go see a band on a Wednesday,” said Jones. “There’s not much around that’s free and family-friendly. We’re really blessed with a great location. Music has a way of bringing people together, and we’ve just been hiring really good bands.”

“Kat puts a hell of a show together,” said Kevin Cleveland, a singer/guitarist who opened up for Heartbreaker at last week’s show. “If you’re local, you have to appreciate what they’re doing here. I’ve been to a lot of local jams, and most of them don’t compare to this.”

On July 30, Groovy Afternoon will perform “A Tribute to the Woodstock Era” on the Summer of Love stage. On Aug. 6, Big Rhythm Wine will perform “A Grateful Dead Experience.”
