Onset-Wareham Fireworks Committee keeps on truckin'

May 19, 2013

In 2007 there were no Fourth of July fireworks in Onset, and Co-Chair of the Onset-Wareham Fireworks Committee Jackie Lindsey is determined to make sure that won't happen on her watch.

"It brings 30-40,000 people to our village. It's important to our business owners and it brings revenue to the town," in the form of meal and hotel taxes for those who stay at a hotel according to Lindsey.

On Sunday, May 19, committee members were at Cranberry Plaza with an old-fashioned fire engine collecting money for the fireworks fund. They need to raise $20,000, and the Community Events Committee will put up another $20,000 to pay for police, maintenance, Harbormaster, and Coast Guard services.

"We raise $20,000 just for the fireworks display," said Lindsey.

On Sunday, Lindsey along with Claire Smith, Mary Crowley, and Margot Rudin collected cash to put toward the fund little by little.

"It all adds up," said Lindsey. "If everyone in town gave a dollar, it would pay for the fireworks."

Next up, the committee will host a fundraiser at the Mezza Luna restaurant in Buzzard's Bay Thursday, June 6, from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $10, which will cover appetizers, raffles and auctions.

Donations may also be mailed to the Wareham Fireworks Fund, PO Box 799, Onset, MA 02558.
