Opinion: Pickleball has a positive impact on town

Aug 1, 2022

To the Editor:

I want to applaud Wareham Week for your recent article about the growing sport of pickleball and its positive impact on our town.

This inexpensive, healthy, and fun sport is growing in popularity nationwide. Athletes of all ages are flocking to the few courts available in our area. Thanks to the interest of our town officials, Wareham Community Outdoor Recreation (CORE), and the hard work of our town maintenance department, Wareham boasts four of the best pickleball courts in our region, centrally located in beautiful Onset. Our courts routinely attract 25+ players every morning, and 50+ on tournament days. Hammond School Park is buzzing and has become a magnet for competitive “picklers” from as far away as Rhode Island!

We also owe a debt of gratitude to visionary Gleason Family YMCA leadership and staff — Lu Brito, especially — for exposing so many of us to this great activity. The Y continues to introduce dozens of new players weekly by offering lessons at their Charge Pond Road courts every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the year.

Finally, let me express my appreciation for the generous sponsorship and encouragement of our local businesses and tournament sponsors, Marc Anthony’s La Pizzeria, Stone Path Malt, Quahog Republic, and Lucky Goat Brewery. Our local members and visiting competitors have enjoyed sampling the outstanding fare and world class service of these fine Wareham establishments!
