Organizations seek community input for improvement of Marks Cove Conservation Area

Feb 21, 2025

The Buzzards Bay Coalition and several partners are working with an engineering firm on developing a vision for the improvement of Mark’s Cove Conservation Area.

On March 2 at 1 p.m. the Coalition will lead a guided tour of the property and take input from attendees on community space needs, opportunities to increase climate change resiliency as well as challenges presented by the site.

On March 4 at 6 p.m. the Coalition will hold a public meeting review and adjust conceptual designs for improvements to the property based on community input. Dinner will be provided.

Ownership of the nearly 118 acre conservation area is divided between the Coalition, Wareham Land Trust, Wildlands Trust, Mass Audubon and the town of Wareham

The property is permanently protected and provides floodwater storage, water purification, biodiversity and recreation, according to the Buzzards Bay Coalition.

However, according to the Coalition the property today is “not at full health.”

Old ditches, earthen and rock berms and irrigation pipes continue to alter the flow of water across the land, drying areas that would typically remain wet. Layers of sand added to old cranberry farms on the property over time now restrict the establishment of wetland plant communities. Invasive species displace native ones, reducing the overall quality of wildlife habitat.

Attendees of both events will evaluate these and other issues which continue to affect the health of the ecosystem.

Parking is located at 37 Nicholas Dr. Three trails totaling 2.5 miles currently exist on the property.
