Owlet returned to nest

Jun 15, 2021

A tiny owlet that fell out of its nest in Onset on June 10 got lucky when a gentle dog found it on the side of the road.

The dog’s owner called over a Wareham Police Officer, who alerted the Department of Natural Resources.

The sun was setting, and the officer couldn’t find the nest, so the owlet spent the night with the officer.

The following day, the officer started inspecting trees to locate the nest.

The possible nesting sites were high enough in the trees that the officer called in Onset Fire.

Onset Fire piloted their bucket truck, and officers were able to reunite the owlet with its mother, a screech owl.

Neither the owlet nor the owl offered comment, but one can presume the pair were happy to be reunited after the owlet’s adventure.
