The pace picks up at Bunker Breakfast

Even Deneen Rose, coordinator of Onset Veterans of Foreign Wars' Bunker Breakfast, was caught off guard by the volume of hungry visitors that came to eat.

With over a dozen people at multiple tables on Saturday morning, the freshly made orders took some time to prepare in the kitchen.

“We are new to the breakfast and we hope that our customers will continue to support us because the more we do it, the better we get at it,” said Rose.

“I wish the food would be ready,” said veteran John Henry Thompson at the breakfast. “They know I would know about that.”

Thompson served as a cook during the Vietnam War, originally stationed in Oklahoma and then as a head cook in Germany for the last nine months of the war. He oversaw meals for more than 10,000 troops.

The Taunton-raised veteran does light plumbing work around the VFW and stays up-to-date about their events. Though most people brought company with them, Thompson sat alone and had decided to check out the breakfast because it was “just something to do.”

He had ordered the Creole omelette: eggs, peppers, onions, linguica, and cheese, complete with home fries and toast.

Other breakfast items, which were all made fresh to order, included southern style sausage, apple french toast crisp, and the bunker.

“Thank you all who came and supported us and we hope to see you all next week,” said Rose. She hopes to continue raising awareness of the VFW, supporting the organization and building by hosting Bunker Breakfasts. The next one will resume on April 17 at 10 a.m.
