Paddling for scholarships
More than 60 participants raised more than $4,800 for the Gleason Family YMCA scholarship fund at the eighth annual Bird Island Challenge on Sunday.
Gleason Family YMCA marketing and development director Jo-Ann Watson said the event was a big success. The money raised goes toward helping families and individuals with financial needs pay for Y memberships.
The race, which was open to all paddling and rowing boats, featured a homemade kayak, and even a whaleboat!
Participants began at Zecco Marina on Main Street and completed a 3-, 6-, or 13-mile paddle to Long Beach (Wareham), Great Hill (Marion), or Bird Island (Marion), respectively, before returning to Zecco Marina.
Finishing the Bird Island race with the best times were 44-year-old Onno Bokhove, who completed the 13 miles by kayak in 1:47:17, and 36-year-old kayaker Ellen Stewart, with a time of 2:15:03.
