'Paint Night' sparks donations for Onset fireworks fund
On a brutally cold December night, 60 people had a summer celebration on their minds during an Onset Bay Association fireworks fundraiser.
Held at B.B.’s Bar & Grille in West Wareham on Thursday, a “Paint Night” raised approximately $1,000 for next year’s fireworks, which were cancelled this year due to a lack of funds.
Each year, the association must raise $40,000 for the event, but sometimes falls short. To remedy that, Onset Bay Association President Kat Jones said the group is redoubling their efforts to ensure the event happens every year.
So far, the association has raised close to $30,000 for next year’s event with more fundraisers on the horizon.
The success of Thursday’s fundraiser caught Jones by surprise.
“I’m floored,” she said. “It’s heartening to see so many people come out and support the fireworks.”
Wareham resident and art teacher Jennifer O’Connor led the program that allowed for people to explore their creative side. Jones said O’Connor and her family are longtime supporters of the event. This summer, O’Connor contacted Jones about helping the association revive the fireworks.
Having O’Connor use her skills as an artist seemed like a great fit, said Jones.
Guests were all given the same sized wood planks to paint, but had their pick of more than 100 templates for customization. During the program, O’Connor offered tips and instruction as attendees enjoyed food, drink and each others company.
