Parents of Wareham's 'home delivery' baby share their story
Aaron and Lisa Pacheco saw a very familiar story in the last issue of Wareham Week – because the story was about them.
Aaron got in touch with Wareham Week via e-mail, sending a snapshot of an article about EMS workers helping his wife deliver their baby at home. Wareham EMS could not identify the couple, due to privacy laws.
Aaron had a simple message: “The EMTs did a fabulous job at my house.”
Aaron, 30, and Lisa, 29, have two children already, and say having a baby at home was never part of the plan. But on Nov. 22, that's what happened.
“I woke up at 1 a.m. just to go to the bathroom, went back to bed, and I was feeling crampy,” said Lisa. “I woke [Aaron] up because I just wasn’t feeling good and said, ‘you might not be going to work today.’”
Shortly thereafter, Lisa’s water broke, fulfilling her earlier prediction. Baby Mason was on his way!
“It was a very interesting chain of events that night,” said Aaron.
Aaron ran outside to pull the van around, and to call the couple's midwife so she could meet them at the hospital. However, the noises coming from inside the house led him to call an ambulance.
“He could hear me screaming from outside,” said Lisa.
Lisa says that from then on, her memory of the night is a bit foggy.
“It was hard because I was in so much pain," Lisa said. "I have a hard time remembering who was there and what happened.”
The first-responders remember, however.
"After we arrived, the police officers told us, 'It looks like we're going to be delivering here," said EMS worker Brian Donahoe. "My partner turned around to get the special kit for these situations, and when she got back, the baby had been delivered."
His partner, Cheryl Evans, had seen her share of home deliveries and said matter-of-factly: "She couldn't make it to the hospital, so we delivered at home."
The couple was relieved.
“I just can’t commend the Wareham Police and the EMTs enough," said Aaron. "They did a fantastic job.”
