A patient at Tobey Hospital has been diagnosed with the new coronavirus.

The patient lives in Plymouth County, and is at least the second case in the county following one person’s diagnosis in Hanover on March 15. Shawn Badgley, the public information officer for Southcoast Health, said that the patient is in self-quarantine at home and under the care of the state Department of Public Health and the Board of Health in his or her town.

The patient walked into the Emergency Department over the weekend.

“All Tobey Hospital staff who interacted with the patient have been contacted by Southcoast Health infection prevention personnel and administrative leaders. Staff members involved with the patient’s care are participating in an active review of the patient’s visit, and we are following all established procedures to safeguard their health and wellbeing,” Dr. Dani Hackner, the chief clinical officer for the hospital group, said. 

The hospital has had other coronavirus tests come back negative, and some are still being processed. 

“Providers, nurses, and staff responded calmly, professionally, accurately, and courageously,” Badgley said. “We couldn’t be more grateful to them.”

Those who believe they may have the coronavirus are asked to call the hospital before arriving to give staff time to prepare.
