A man led police on a chase by car and on foot on Thursday following a fight.

Wareham Police responded to Bodfish Avenue at about 11 p.m. on Thursday night following reports of a fight.

When they arrived, they discovered that one of the vehicles of someone involved had left the scene.

Sergeant Kevin Reilly spotted a car matching that description and attempted to stop it near Shaw’s.

The driver did not stop and drove into the parking lot at Town Hall. The driver got out of his car without putting it in park, causing it to roll, and ran toward Spillane Field.

A passenger put the car in park while Plymouth County Deputy Sheriff Scott Sawler and K-9 “Lucky” began the search.

Sawler and Lucky quickly found the man hiding in a swampy area near the Middle School tennis courts and arrested him.

Glassine bags containing suspected illegal narcotics were found in the suspect’s car.

Geoffrey Whiting, 34, of East Wareham, is charged with failure to stop for police, marked lanes violation, possession of a Class “E” drug, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

The passenger, Mark St. George 31, of Wareham, will be summoned to court for possession of a Class “E” drug.
