Police, firefighters busy as storm blankets town
Wareham weathered the second major snowstorm of the season on Friday with no reported major accidents or power outages.
Residents woke up to mild temperatures and rain that soon switched to wet, heavy snow around 9 a.m. In preparation for the storm, police issued a parking ban the night before, and school officials dismissed students early. A winter storm watch was issued Thursday night and ended Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Police and fire officials were kept busy responding to downed power lines, minor motor vehicle accidents and branches that broke under the snow’s weight. Police Chief Kevin Walsh and Wareham Fire Chief Robert McDuffy were not immediately available for comment.
While the storm knocked out electricity to thousands of people, mostly near Boston, local residents were kept out of the cold. At 3:45 p.m., Eversource reported that only 10 of Wareham’s 14,375 customers were without power.
According to the National Weather Service, 4.5 inches of snow had fallen by early afternoon in West Wareham. Forecasters had predicted anywhere from 4 to 8 inches would blanket the South Coast.
