Police nab pair minutes after break-and-entry into Restful Lane home
An East Sandwich woman and Canton man were arrested on March 7 after a Restful Lane resident returned home to find a breaking-and-entering incident in progress.
According to Wareham Police, the resident found an unknown vehicle occupied by a woman she did not know parked in her driveway when she arrived at her home at approximately 5 p.m.
"Upon noticing the resident, the unknown female, later identified as 21-year-old Catherine McAlpine ... honked the horn and quickly left the area," according to a police statement. "As the vehicle was leaving the area, a male ran out of the residence carrying a bag containing several unknown items."
Officers searched the area and located the vehicle a short distance from the victim's home, police said. During their investigation, officers noticed 21-year-old Daniel Beal walking in the area.
"Continued investigation with regard to Mr. Beal's involvement [in] the incident revealed that he had left the bag that he was carrying in a nearby playground," according to the statement.
Police found the bag and determined that it contained items stolen from the Restful Lane home.
McAlpine of 5 Stonefield Drive in East Sandwich and Beal of 6 Glendale Way in Canton were arrested and charged with breaking-and-entering in the daytime, larceny of more than $250, and receiving stolen property.
Police Chief Richard Stanley parised "the investigative skills of the responding officers and Detective Michael Smith," who arrested the suspects within minutes of committing the crime, according to the statement.
