Jul 14, 2010

Wareham Police have recovered several extremely rare baseball cards that were reported stolen from a local residence. The victim told police that the cards have been in the family for many years.

On July 12, police stopped a vehicle driven by a suspect, Melissa Sleeper, 29, of 7 Rainbow Circle, Buzzards Bay, that detectives believed was involved in the cards' theft. Animal Control Officer Carlston Wood happened to be driving down Route 6 when he noticed a vehicle matching the description of Sleeper's and alerted detectives.

Sleeper had several rare baseball cards that were ultimately identified by the victim as the ones stolen from his residence. The stolen cards included two Ty Cobbs, a Walter Johnson, a Heinie Wagner (not to be confused with Honus Wagner), and a card commemorating Babe Ruth. In total, the police said that the cards have an appraised value of just over $11,000.

Sleeper was arrested at the scene and charged with receiving stolen property over $250. She was held overnight at the Wareham Police Station and was arraigned at Wareham 4th District Court the next morning. She was released on bail and will return to court at a future date.
