Pre-K and kindergarteners enjoy a smooth first day

All of Wareham’s students are officially back to school.

A week after their older peers returned from summer vacation, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students settled into Minot Forest and Decas Elementary Wednesday, and both schools’ principals said the first day of school was a good one.

“Preschool went extremely well,” said Minot Principal Joan Seamans. “The students I greeted were happy and looked so cute in their back-to-school outfits.”

Seamans said the children had been at the school the previous week for orientation, where they were able to meet their teacher and see their new classroom.

“I followed one line to their room and heard a student say to his teacher, ‘I know where the classroom is. It's the one with the blocks,’" said Seamans. “As they walked by a fourth grade classroom, I heard a fourth grade student say, "‘Aw, the preschoolers are here.’"

At Decas, 240 kindergarteners arrived Wednesday morning, and a least one had a little more fun than he could handle.

“It was a busy day,” said Principal Donna Noonan.  "Students met new friends, experienced the whole-class free breakfast, and learned classroom rules and routines—and the best part—the got to play on the playground officially as Decas students! For one little guy, it was such a fun-filled day packed with excitement that he fell asleep on the bus ride home!”

Noonan noted that she wanted to remind parents to make sure all dismissal arrangements are made in advance and communicated to all parties involved. In recent weeks, parents have tried to make last minute transportation changes, and it's often difficult to coordinate changes last minute.

“With this many new students, clear and timely communication is important to ensure everyone's safety,” said Noonan.
