Rachel's Challenge returning to Wareham
Rachel's Challenge is coming back to Wareham Public Schools next month courtesy of the Scotty Monteiro Jr. Foundation and the program needs adult volunteers for assemblies aimed at empowering youth in the community.
Rachel Joy Scott was the first victim of the April 20, 1999, Columbine High School shootings.
In the weeks and months after her death, Scott's family studied the 17-year-old's six journals she left behind. It was in those journals and in an essay entitled, "My Ethics, My Code of Life," that her family learned that Rachel believed, above all, in kindness, and that showing compassion could start a chain reaction of the same.
The family formed Rachel's Challenge, a nonprofit dedicated to honoring Rachel and spreading her code of ethics, hoping to start that chain reaction.
There will be Chain Reaction assemblies from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wareham Middle School on April 8 and at the high school on April 9. The Chain Reactions consist of 125 students, two presenters and the event organizers are looking for 25 adult volunteers.
There will also be three assemblies on April 10 for students at Decas Elementary School and on April 11 at Minot Forest Elementary School
Coaches, teachers, organization leaders, police officers, firefighters, young adults, parents and anyone who cares about the youth is welcome to volunteer.
Volunteers do need to have a Criminal Offender Record Information report. For more information on how to obtain a CORI and information on Rachel's Challenge in general, contact Judi Debonise at the High School 508-291-3510 or Sharon Burbrigde at the Middle School at (508) 291-3550.
