Red, white and boom: Onset Bay Association fireworks draw thousands

Jul 2, 2017

Despite a cloudy night, thousands turned out to see the Onset Bay Association fireworks to kick off the Fourth of July weekend.

After a Saturday full of activities, including the Blessing of the Fleet, music at the bandshell and events at Onset shops all day, people lined Onset Beach and the bluffs above it to watch the fireworks. Nearly 20,000 people visited Onset on Saturday, estimated Ian Gilligan, an Onset Bay Association volunteer.

The clouds made it difficult to see some of the fireworks, but people made the best of it with their own sparklers on the beach, light-up toys and food from nearby restaurants.

The budget for the fireworks was $40,000, half of which went to the police detail and the other half to pyrotechnics, according to Gilligan. This money came from fundraising from the community.

Though the night's cloudy sky obstructed the view of some fireworks, the crowd cheered over their favorites and watched attentively, applauding at the end of the display.
