REMINDER: Town Meeting tonight!
Hurricane Sandy canceled Town Meeting on Monday. The meeting will wrap up Thursday, November 1, at 7 p.m. in the Wareham High School auditorium.
Town Moderator Claire Smith had asked voters not to attend the meeting on Monday, noting that Governor Deval Patrick had declared a state of emergency.
Voters complied. Smith opened the meeting with only herself and the Town Clerk present so that, due to lack of a quorum, Smith was able to reschedule the meeting.
“While the governor has not banned assemblies, I would strongly request that we respect the wishes of our public safety officials, and stay at home and stay off the roads during this storm,” Smith said Sunday.
Town Meeting adjourned last week with just a handful of business left on the agenda, including a proposal that would allow the town to construct a solar field to help power the Water Pollution Control Facility. For more information, click here.
If a quorum of voters had attended Town Meeting on Monday, the meeting would have had to go on as scheduled. Smith explained that by law, the town is required to reconvene the meeting because voters set a specific time and date to reconvene. If the town failed to reconvene, the remaining business could not be acted upon.
Neither the moderator nor the clerk were in danger when traveling. Police Chief Richard Stanley arranged for police to escort them to the high school and back home.
