The usual signs and faces of the Saturday morning protest in front of Town Hall were greeted by a suprise vistior of congressional-proportions.
Democratic U.S. Representative for Massachusetts, Bill Keating, made a suprise visit to Wareham Law and Democracy's Saturday, Jan. 17 stand-out protest. Keating served as District Attorney of Norfolk County from 1999 until 2011 when he began his work as a representative.
Keating currently serves as representative for the 9th District, which serves Wareham and much of the South Coast.
Manfred Wiegandt is a member of Wareham Law and Democracy and spoke to Keating during his stay at the protest. He told Wareham Week that Keating thanked Wareham for Law and Democracy for their work, said their activities were exactly what needed to be done.
According to Wiegandt, Keating is sponsoring a bill regarding Greenland and has two Republican co-cosponsors. Other items discussed were the investigations of Minnesota Govenor, Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, to which Wiegandt said Keating was outraged over.
Keating also shared his anger that immigrant visas from 75 countries would not be processed. This stems from an annoucment made by the U.S Department of State that updated the list that includes countries like Brazil, Iran, Cape Verde and Somalia.
"He also spoke of how immigrants would come to the front door to go sign their final paperwork only to be rushed right through the back door by ICE and never given a chance to sign their papers and become legal citizen," Wiegandt wrote.
