The Coast Guard rescued two men on Monday, September 10, after the men became disoriented while trying to find their way to a Wareham marina in the early morning hours.

The 41-year-old and 21-year-old men, who were not identified, were traveling in a 16-foot fishing boat that they launched from Wareham at approximately 4 p.m. on Sunday, Coast Guard officials said.

One of the men had called his girlfriend from a cell phone at approximately 2:30 a.m. and said he was having trouble, said Stanton. At some point, the boat ran out of gas, officials said.

The cell phone signal was tracked to the Great Harbor, Woods Hole area. A search was conducted in Buzzards Bay, the Nantucket Sound, and the Vineyard Sound, Stanton said.

The men beached the boat on Naushon Island, which is part of the Elizabeth Islands, according to the Coast Guard. They were uninjured and transported to Air Station Cape Cod by helicopter at approximately 1 p.m. on Monday.

The Coast Guard launched four boats and a helicopter in the search. The Wareham Harbormaster Department, Wareham Fire, and Onset Fire assisted in the search of Wareham's waterways.

It is unclear whether the men are Wareham residents. Stanton said he could not confirm where the men live.

The Coast Guard reported that the men were indeed wearing lifejackets aboard their boat. Officials had previously thought that they did not have lifejackets.

"We want to stress the importance of carrying the right equipment, filing a float plan, and telling loved ones where you will be," said Lt. Ruairi White, the command duty officer at the Coast Guard's Sector Southeastern New England Command Center. The men "are fortunate to have a successful outcome without life jackets or marine radios; these are tools that maximize our search efforts."
