Residents evacuated following gas break in Onset
Dec 23, 2016
Residents of two streets in Onset were evacuated following a gas break Friday morning.
Crews are working to remedy a natural gas line which was struck around 10:50 a.m. Residents of Camp and 11th streets were evacuated from their homes in the meantime.
"We'll end up metering all the houses to make sure there's no pocketed gas," said Onset Fire Department Chief Ray Goodwin.
Natural gas, which is combustible, is lighter than air and tends to rise. Goodwin said thanks to windy weather conditions, the gas has dissipated and poses less of a threat.
Additionally, the location of the leak was far enough away from busy roads and houses.
Goodwin said the situation should be cleared soon.
