Richard A. Gonsalves, 89
Richard A. Gonsalves, 89, of Onset, died April 19, in the Royal Cape Cod Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Buzzards Bay. He was the son of the late Bartholomew and Lena (Pina) Gonsalves.
He was born in Bourne and lived in New York and Onset for many years.
Mr. Gonsalves was a WWII veteran serving in the Merchant Marines. He served for many years on the U.S.S. United States as a cook before retiring.
After retiring, he worked for the Dance Theater of Harlem under Director Arthur Mitchell. He traveled the world and met Queen Elizabeth.
He was likely to be found enjoying himself out at sea. He also enjoyed the arts, theater, and collecting model ships. He volunteered at the Church of the Good Shepherd. He was a member of the Seafarers International Union. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America.
Survivors include his sister, Catherine C. “Kay” Lopes of Onset; several nephews and nieces including Kelley Andrews, his primary caregiver. He was the brother of the late Elizabeth “Betty” Dias and Dorothy Andrews.
