Robbery suspect arraigned in Superior Court

May 3, 2013

The man accused of robbing Eastern Bank on Main Street in February and Taunton Federal Credit Union in Middleborough late last year was arraigned on two counts of armed robbery in Plymouth County Superior Court on May 2.

Nicholas Liadis, 35, is currently on house arrest after posting $5,000 bail after a Wareham District Court hearing. That bail is being transferred to Superior Court.

The proceedings are taking place in Superior Court because Liadis is facing felony charges.

Liadis is wearing a GPS monitoring bracelet and is forbidden from venturing more than 200 feet from his home. He is due back in Superior Court on June 12 for a pre-trial conference.

Liadis was indicted by a grand jury on April 12 in Superior Court.

During a bail hearing in Wareham on March 25, following a 20-day evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital,  Liadis' attorney, Matt Walsh, said that his client has an I.Q. below 70 and was "prompted and coached to commit these crimes by a convicted felon."

Liadis will have a competency hearing, and if he is found competent to stand trial, he faces up to ten years in prison — five years for each count of armed robbery.

According to his attorney, Liadis was evaluated by the Carver Public Schools at age 16, and was found to be operating with the mental capacity of somebody between seven and eight years old.

Police arrested Liadis on Feb. 28, the evening of the Eastern Bank robbery, while he was working at Cox Corner Pizza in Duxbury. Liadis told Duxbury Police that the stolen money was in the trunk of his car, according to court documents.

Wareham Police obtained a warrant to search the car the following morning, and found stolen cash and the clothing and sunglasses police say he wore when he allegedly robbed Eastern Bank, according to court documents.
