Robbins inducted into Cape League Hall
The Cape Cod Baseball League welcomed 10 new members into its Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 20, including Wareham resident Steve Robbins.
As field and general manager for Wareham, Steve Robbins’ influence as a major shaper of the Cape League as it stands today stretches back eight decades to when he began as a player 1937.
In 1946, when a team dropped out of the predecessor to the Cape league, Robbins lobbied to bring the town into the league's folds. He led the franchise through lean years, often dipping into his own pocket to afford equipment, and turned it into a viable contender.
In 1964, he lobbied successfully to have lights and dugouts installed at Spillane Field, bringing night games to Wareham, before retiring in 1966 and passing the franchise on to John Wylde.
His “labor of love” attitude toward his team lasted for 45 years as he put in every effort to ensure the players who passed through his gates had the opportunity to go on in their careers. Robbins represented Wareham in the 1963 merger which formed the Cape League into the premier college summer league it is today.
