Robots, lipstick, and more on display at middle school science fair

Feb 24, 2016

From slime and marigolds to crayon lipstick and sustainable energy complexes, the middle school science fair was bustling with activity.

Sixth grade teacher Kimberly Scott said it was only the third year putting on the event, but student participation had doubled since last year’s fair. This year, she said, there were 270 students participating, and 135 projects.

The students were judged on their projects at the fair Tuesday evening. The judging took place three times during the day, and the winners will go to the state level. The students who place in the top 10 percent of students at state will go on to regionals. Wareham is region five.

Last year when we did the project, [some of our students] qualified to go to the international fair,” Scott said. “They received a certificate, an award, and letters from senators and representatives. There’s a lot of good opportunities that start from here.”

The first-place winners of the school competition were as follows:

5th Grade: Gabe Silva and Indiana Troupe, “Is the five-second rule safe?”

6th Grade – 8th Grade: Makayla Semiao and Abby Wiksten, “Sunny with a chance of skin damage … are you safe?”

There were also two special awards:

Kids’ Choice: Jordan Bumpus, Isabella Deblois, and Artemis Sivviankis, “Organic Makeup”

Principal’s Award: Jordan DeMedeiros, “Renewable Energy Complex”
