Roger B. Whitcomb, 87
Roger B. Whitcomb, 87, of Wareham, formerly of Quincy, died August 10 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was the husband of Marie (Vaccaro) Whitcomb. They were married for 38 years. He was the son of the late Chester and Gladys (Clark) Whitcomb.
He was born and raised in Quincy where he lived for 52 years. For the past 35 years he has resided in Wareham.
Mr. Whitcomb served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1947. He was a World War II veteran. After the war, he continued his service in the Navy Reserves at the Naval Air Station in South Weymouth where he was an instructor in the Naval Sea Cadet Corps Unit.
Mr. Whitcomb worked as a court officer at the Quincy District Courthouse for many years before retiring. He was a founding member of the Massachusetts Bay Constables Association. He was also a Constable in Quincy, Weymouth, and Braintree, a Massachusetts Justice of the Peace and a notary public. He was also a professional photographer for 20 years, specializing in event and wedding photography.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church-on-the-Canal in Buzzards Bay, Rural Lodge A. F. & A. M. in Quincy, Braintree Lodge of Elks #2622, and a member and past commander at the Quincy Veteran’s Council in 1981-1982.
Survivors include his widow; his son, Jon M. Whitcomb and his wife Maureen of Plymouth; his daughter, Lisa M. Whitcomb of Buzzards Bay; 3 grandchildren, Zachary Jones, Nicholas Whitcomb, and Brianna Whitcomb; 2 sisters, Dorothy DeVoe of Canton and Beverly Ryan of MO; several nephews and nieces.
His funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2011 in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church-on-the-Canal, 165 Main St., Buzzards Bay.
Visiting hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., (Rte. 28), Wareham.
