A rough homecoming weekend for the Gatemen

Jun 21, 2010

The Gatemen had a tough homestand this weekend, shutout 4-0 against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks on Friday night and losing both games of their scheduled double-header against the Orleans Firebirds, 4-3 and 7-2.

Nothing seemed to go right for the Gatemen on Friday night. Duke University freshman Devin Burke took the loss from the mound, but it was the offense's failure to convert runs from seven hits (as opposed to the Harbor Hawk's eight) and the defense's four errors that distinguished play.

The Gatemen should have won the first game of the Saturday double-header, outhitting the Orleans Firebirds 9-6 but again failing to bring runners across the plate, stranding nine on the base paths.

Matt Barnes, of University of Connecticut, evened his record at 1-1 and went all seven innings in the shortened game.

The second game was all Orleans. The Firebirds led throughout the game, accruing five runs in seven hits against starting pitcher Jed Bradley, from Georgia Tech. They then gave relief pitcher Kenneth Ferrer, from Elon College, a rough time in his first outing of the summer. Ferrer gave up two hits and two earned runs in his inning of relief.

But apparently, all the team needed to do was get away from Spillane, as they traveled to Harwich on Sunday night to defeat the Mariners 5-4. Right-handed pitcher Jack Armstrong made his season debut after postseason play with Vanderbilt, and he gave up ten hits but held on for the win.

First baseman Max Muncy continued to lead the offense, contributing three RBIs and going 1-3 with a sacrifice fly. George Springer went 3-4.
