Russell W. Bennett, 73, of West Wareham, passed away on Dec. 28, in Tobey Hospital. He was the son of the late George M. and Dorothy (Reed) Bennett.

Born and raised in New Bedford, he attended local schools, graduating from New Bedford High.

Mr. Bennett was formerly employed at Giusti Baking Company, Teledyne Rodney Metals and UMass Dartmouth.

He was an avid sports fan of all the Boston teams. He was an officer in the Eagles Little League (now Whaling City LL) serving 22 years. He also managed teams in the New Bedford Pony League and Teener League. He was co-founder, coach and referee of the Bay State Basketball League and also coached in Midget football and youth hockey.

In later years, after moving to West Wareham, he was a longtime volunteer for the Wareham Gatemen baseball program. He also worked with the UMass Dartmouth Hockey Program as the “Voice of the Corasairs” for over 25 years.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed swimming and relaxing at Ned’s Point and walking the Cape Cod Canal with his friends.

At his request, there will be no services.
