Safe Boater's Day this Saturday
The Town of Wareham Harbormaster's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct a "Safe Boater's Day" on Saturday, September 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Onset Pier.
Coast Guard Auxiliary Instructors and Vessel Examiners will be on-hand to provide boaters with safe boating information and tips. Boaters can have their boats checked for required equipment, with no penalty for missing or defective equipment. Coast Guard Auxiliary Decals will be provided for those boats passing the Vessel Safety Checks.
The event will feature free materials and tours of the town's new Boston Whaler patrol boat and the U.S. Coast Guard's 25' Search and Rescue Boat.
Representatives of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's Admission Partners Program will also be on-hand to speak with students and parents about attending the Coast Guard Academy.
There has been a 17-percent increase in boating accidents in the first six months of 2010, which indicates a need for boaters to receive accurate information on how to protect lives on the water.
